Anyone who makes a threat or uses this kind of tactic wants to make you afraid in order to get what they want. This is blackmail, emotional abuse and a form of power and control – all extremely toxic! You never deserve to be threatened and no matter what you are not responsible for your partner’s choice to be abusive.
If you are under 18 – This type of content is classed as being child abuse imagery. Speak with a professional you trust who can support you with this. There are other organisations such as Internet Watch Foundation who can try to remove the image of you and ChildLine 0800 1111 who you can call for further support.
Save all proof – if your partner or ex-partner is sending you threats via social media, voice messages, text or email keep them on your phone or another device, take and save screen shots and keep them in a password protected account. This way all threats are documented if you choose to take or seek legal action.
Go to your support system – you are not in this alone. A support system can help you stay strong. Speak with people you trust and feel safe with (a friend, parent or counsellor) for advice and support. This can help diffuse any feeling of anxiety, stress or worry.
Stand by your boundaries – if you feel this is safe for you and your partner or ex-partner won’t become violent or harm you stand your ground and don’t give into the threats. Seek support and save the proof. If you feel you are at risk of violence or harm contact other organisations for support who can help to move you out and away from the toxic relationship.
Neutralise the situation – if your partner or ex-partner is threatening to send pictures to friends, family or work you can neutralise the situation by letting them know what is going on and the threats you are receiving.
Report them – If you are 18 or over you can seek advice and support and report them to Revenge Porn Helpline on 0845 6000 459 or Victim Support Tel: 08 08 16 89 111
